Already the first Aussie to win an Olympic medal in snowboarding, James will be hunting gold in the men’s half-pipe.
And coming in on the back of a gold medal at the 2022 X-Games in Aspen just under three weeks from the start of the half-pipe competition in Beijing, he’s in great form to pull it off.
But before getting there, he had a bone to pick with Sunrise weatherman Sam Mac.
Speaking to the Channel 7 breakfast show, host Nat Barr couldn’t help herself.
“Our own Sam Mac is dating your sister, Rebecca,” Barr asked. “We understand you haven’t had a chance to meet in person. Do you think, though, from what you’ve read that she could have done better?”
Mac and stylist Rebecca began dating in 2020 after being introduced by a mutual friend.
She also made the move from Melbourne to Sydney and the pair posted on Instagram that they bought a house together in October.
So James was clearly waiting for the question and shot back a hilarious response.
“I mean, no one will ever be good enough for my sister Rebecca,” James said.
“But Sam’s acceptance is on the line here, when he’s going to have to tell me how the weather is in China, and if this weatherman can’t pull it off then we might have an issue when we finally meet.”
Mac was up to the banter and was asked about whether he’d spoked to James and had the ground rules laid out to him.
“No, he’s been very relaxed about the whole thing, almost borderline disinterested,” he laughed.
“We have had a number of FaceTime chats. The great thing for Scotty, and I hope this is an edge for him heading into the Olympic Games, is that obviously, I’ve represented Australia at international level schoolboy soccer.
“So there is an elite athlete synergy that we seem to have, it’s almost an unspoken thing that a lot of people just wouldn’t get, but I feel that could be the difference.”
But while the exchange was all very tongue-in-cheek, James has had his own relationship successes, becoming engaged to Chloe Stroll, the daughter of F1 boss and Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll and sister of Aston Martin F1 driver Lance Stroll.
He posted an Instagram video in November when he popped the question to Stroll after just over two and a half years of dating.
Chloe revealed it was Lance had actually set her up with Scotty and they met in New York.
But James said asking for Chloe’s hand in marriage will set him in good stead for handling the pressure when he’s trying to tame the half-pipe.
“I really did set myself up well,” James said when asked about his fiancee. “You ask me about pressure, there’s no more pressure than asking Chloe’s dad in particular for her hand in marriage, so that was a lot of pressure.
“And the other pressure was on the day asking the woman of my dreams to marry me. I’ve set myself up well in the world of pressure at the moment, which is fantastic.”
