Aston Villa transfer completed as Manchester United confirm loan move

Manchester United have confirmed that defender Axel Tuanzebe has joined Italian side Napoli on loan until the rest of the season.

The 24-year-old was on loan at Aston Villa since the start of the 2021/22 campaign, but has since changed clubs due to a lack of assurances regarding his playing time for the rest of the season.

Tuanzebe made just 11 appearances for Villa this term in what was his third loan spell at the club, having previously played for the Midlands club in two Championship campaigns.

He started only four Premier League games this season and under new Villa boss Steven Gerrard, the centre-back had only seen eight minutes of action from off the bench in seven games.

Napoli boss Luciano Spalletti wanted to recruit a new centre-back this month after the Serie A club sold Kostas Manolas to Olympiacos, while Kalidou Koulibaly is away on international duty with Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Tuanzebe struggled for first-team minutes at Villa Park with Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings settled as a pairing at the heart of Villa’s defence, while Kortney Hause is also a reliable understudy.
